At FERN., we actively educate our staff on ESG principles to embed sustainability in everything we do.
We follow a detailed checklist with specific measures to lower the carbon footprint throughout pre-production, on set, and post-production. During pre-production, we brief each team member on their role-specific actions to minimize environmental impact. All crew receive comprehensive guidance to support eco-friendly decision-making. These steps not only reduce our carbon footprint but also foster awareness and transform production practices.
Our execute team regularly participates in speaking engagements, sharing insights and practical strategies with industry peers to encourage responsible practices across the sector. By empowering our own team and contributing to broader conversations, we’re fostering a culture of awareness and action that helps push ESG higher on the industry agenda.
We firmly believe in the power of conscious purchasing to create a positive impact on our planet. By choosing clean, responsibly-sourced food and materials, we support the health and well-being of people, animals, and nature alike.
Every decision we make has the potential to uplift and protect the ecosystems we rely on. Through mindful purchasing, we’re investing in a sustainable future where both the environment and all its inhabitants can thrive.
In FERN., we are committed to meeting the highest possible standards for sustainability when purchasing products or services. At the same time, we ensure that the purchase is also economically sustainable.
We recognize that these goals can sometimes conflict, but we see it as part of our responsibility to always opt for the most socially responsible and environmentally sustainable solution, in alignment with the ISO 20400 standard.
FERN. has established a set of environmental requirements for the companies and organisations from whom we purchase products and services. Our 4 Core Principles for Procurement:
Environment / We prioritise products and services with minimal environmental impact throughout their lifecycle.
Ethical Practices / We engage in fair and responsible trading, ensuring our suppliers adhere to the highest ethical standards.
Social Responsibility / We support suppliers who promote labor rights, safe working conditions, and contribute to their communities.
Economic Efficiency / We seek the best value for money, considering not just the purchase price but also the environmental and social impacts over the product’s or service’s lifetime.
Youth Talent Development / Increase the proportion of both employees and talents under 25 to 15% by the end of next year to support young talent.
Launch a structured internship program with at least 5 participants annually, focusing on empowering young professionals in the creative and production industries.
Diversity in Talents / Achieve a 50/50 gender balance representation among our creative talents both in the film and photo department
Workforce Diversity / Increase overall workforce diversity by hiring at least 25% of new recruits from underrepresented groups in the coming year.
Employee Wellbeing & Engagement / Conduct annual employee satisfaction surveys, targeting a 90% satisfaction rate with DEI initiatives by the end of next year.
Our total CO2 emissions for 2023 amount to 10.28 tonnes.
Scope 1: 0 kg
Scope 2: 1.012,00 kg
Scope 3: 9.265,86 kg
CO2 per. million USD
1,01 tonnes
We target to increase our average CO2-reduction on productions to 40% by 2026.
To calculate our project based climate reports we utilize the Green Producers Tool.
In accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG protocol), the tool categorizes emissions according to Scope 1, 2 and 3. It simplifies and streamlines the quantification and reporting process while ensuring that the climate accounting is based on established frameworks and regulations. This promotes transparency and accountability in the work with climate accounting.
The GHG protocol has defined three scopes to include both direct and indirect GHG emissions:
Scope 1 / Direct emissions from fuel combustion from own machines, vehicles and other fossil fuels.
Scope 2 / Indirect emissions from the generation of purchased energy, including electricity, steam, heat or cooling
Scope 3 / Indirect emissions from upstream and downstream activities, including travel, purchased goods, services and equipment, and transport and distribution of goods.
Emissions in Green Producers Tool are measured in CO2 equivalents (CO2-eq), and provide a standardized unit for assessing the impact of various greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrogen oxide (N2O), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), as well as hydrofluorocarbons ( HFCs) and per-fluorocarbons (PFKs).
With the Green Producers Tool, we can measure the emissions of our production to clearly identify where to achieve emission reductions. The Tool measures the life cycle emissions of different products and activities relevant to the cultural sector. Life cycle analysis (LCA – short for life cycle assessment) is a method for analyzing the environmental impact of products and services throughout their entire life cycle – from the extraction of natural resources, through production, transport, and use, to waste management at the end of their life
This means that we include the direct and indirect emissions of the products and account for the climate footprint of the included products, enabling us to identify the total greenhouse gas emissions from a production. In the tool, the following overall emission categories are included:
Transport
Food & Beverage
Accommodation
Energy
Purchases
Art department
Equipment
Lights & AV
Materials
Waste & Recycling
